a word on the hybrid athlete craze

All the buzz lately is about those athletes who make it seem so easy. They run 6-minute miles while casually repping 275 on the bench. They post their workouts—twice, sometimes thrice a day—and their refueling routines, feasts fit for madmen. You think it’s impossible.

But what lurks beneath—what you don’t see—are the years of base building. It’s nearly impossible to become such a hybrid athlete quickly, even if you follow their dual approach. Without a solid foundation, optimizing for both musculature and cardiovascular health takes many years to reach their level.

Often, these athletes have already built a strong muscular base from years of weightlifting before they enhance their cardiovascular capabilities.

Training blocks—that’s the secret. Periods of optimization and focus on one aspect—whether it means dialing in on Ironman training for six months or going on a six-month bulk. That’s what you don’t see. Don't lose your mind over social media impossibility. Take heart.

Rome was not built in a day.
